Grading Guide
Grading is an opinion, not a science. We calibrate ours against the Overstreet standard and err toward honesty — if we're on the fence between two grades, we call the lower one. Every grade reflects the whole book: cover, spine, pages, staples, and paper quality together.
We sell raw (unslabbed) copies only, unless otherwise noted.
Near Mint
Overstreet 9.2–9.8Essentially unread-looking. Cover is flat and bright, corners sharp, spine tight with no stress lines, staples clean and rust-free. Pages are white to off-white and supple. You might find the most minor bindery imperfection under close inspection — a hairline crease, a faint printing artifact — but nothing that registers at arm's length.
If you're buying to read and re-read and still want it looking great on a shelf, this is your grade.
Very Fine
Overstreet 8.0–8.5A very nice copy with minimal wear. Cover still has good reflectivity, colors strong. May have one or two small, almost imperceptible creases, very slight spine stress, or the faintest corner blunting. Staples may show a touch of discoloration. Pages still supple and white to off-white. Eye appeal remains high.
A collector's copy by any reasonable standard.
Fine
Overstreet 6.0–6.5Above average but clearly read. Some minor wear accumulation — slight spine roll, possible minor stress lines, a small corner crease or two. Cover still bright but reflectivity has started to soften. Staple area may show minor stress. Pages may be off-white to slightly tannish.
Still a genuinely attractive copy. Nothing jumps out at you, but this one's been loved.
Good
Overstreet 2.0–2.5A reading copy showing significant wear. Cover may have heavier creases, substantial fading, and low reflectivity. Corners likely blunted or rounded. Possible moderate soiling, spine roll, small tears. Staples may be rusty. Pages may be tan to brown — still readable, not brittle. Complete and intact; all pages and covers present.
For completionists filling a hole in their collection, this gets the job done.
Fair
Overstreet 1.0–1.5Heavy wear throughout. Still complete and readable but not a pretty copy. Cover may be loose or partially detached. Significant creasing, soiling, possible amateur repairs. This copy has lived a life.
We'll tell you exactly what's going on with it in the condition notes.
Poor
Overstreet 0.5This copy has seen better days, and we'll be upfront about it. Structural issues, possible missing pieces, significant damage.
We only sell PR copies when they're genuinely scarce issues where even a rough copy is hard to find. Condition notes will be thorough.
A note on borderline grades
When a copy doesn't fit cleanly into a single grade, the condition notes say so explicitly. “Solid VF with one small corner crease” tells you more than just “VF.” That's intentional. We don't hedge. We don't say “fine for the grade.” We just tell you what's there.
How we grade
- We grade in good light against a neutral background
- We assess cover first, then spine, then staples, then interior pages
- When in doubt between two grades, we call the lower one
- We photograph condition issues as part of the listing photos wherever possible
